A growing number of companies are implementing e-discovery. But before your company finalizes its process, take a minute to answer the following questions. Have you covered all the bases or do you need to make revisions to a few areas?

Policy and awareness

* Do you have a records management and retention policy?
* Is it widely communicated?
* Is it actively monitored and strictly enforced?

Information management

* Does IT know what data it stores, where it's located and how it's managed?
* Does IT have tools to automate and support compliance with records management and retention policies?

Roles and responsibilities

* Do you define and communicate roles and responsibilities to data owners, custodians, stewards and users?
* Is there a person responsible for coordinating all e-discovery requests?

* Is there a formal procedure for responding to legal hold requests and communicating the hold to all affected parties?
* Does the organization have access to e-discovery search and forensics expertise?
