Atto rolls out 8 Gig FC-to-SAS storage controller

Atto Technology Inc. released the FastStream SC 8500, an 8 Gbps Fibre Channel-to-SAS/SATA RAID Storage Controller. The FastStream SC 8500 sits between a SAN and JBOD storage, and provides host connectivity to up to 128 SAS or SATA enclosures.

Atto also added security and automation features to its Xtend SAN iSCSI software initiator for Mac OS X at Macworld. Xtend SAN now includes HeaderDigest and DataDigest with error level 1 processing, which is used to guarantee iSCSI header data integrity. Atto also added a Command Line Interface installation option for iSCSI target management and automation.

Imation introduces SSD and portable hard drives

Imation Corp. introduced its new solid-state drive (SSD) solutions and SSD upgrade kit. The M-Class and S-Class SSD drives are available in 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch configurations, respectively, with capacities ranging from 32 GB to 128 GB. Imation also released its new Apollo Expert UX 2.5-inch portable hard drive for laptops, and the Apollo Pro UX 3.5-inch portable hard drive for desktops. The Expert UX offers up to 500 GB of capacity, while the Pro UX holds up to 1.5 TBs of capacity.

JMR launches Mac NAS for video editing

JMR Electronics Inc. launched a Mac-compatible 16-bay RAID storage system at Macworld. The BlueStor PeSAN RAID line was developed as high-performance DAS or NAS for data-intensive IT applications and video editing. JMR claims a single 16-bay,

JMR also brought out an 8-bay BlueStor 888 desktop storage system for the Mac or PC. JMR claims the BlueStor 888 can deliver more than 500 Mbps throughput and stores up to 8 TB in a 7.5 inch x 11 inch footprint. The desktop solution has mini-SAS host connectivity and can be daisy-chained for additional storage.

Toshiba brings out 500 GB personal storage device

Toshiba's Storage Device Division announced the release of a 500 GB personal storage device. The USB 2.0 device features the company's NTI Shadow automatic backup software. The company says the 500 GB external hard drive can hold up to 142,000 digital photos, 131,000 music files, 222 hours of DVD-quality videos or 58 hours of high-definition videos. The new 500 GB drive costs $179.99.

Western Digital rolls out Mac portable drives

Western Digital Corp. introduced the Mac-preformatted My Passport for Mac portable USB drive and My Book Mac Edition portable USB drive. The My Passport for Mac is available in 320 GB and 500 GB devices, while the My Book Mac Edition includes 1 TB of storage capacity. Both drives are configured to work with Apple Time Machine backup software.
