3PAR supports SATA disk drives

3PAR claims it will support SATA without a reduction in performance; Pillar to ship application-aware thin provisioning; Incipient gets $15.6 million in new funding.

Weekly compilation of storage news:

3PAR supports SATA disk drives
3PAR introduced "Nearline for Online," a new feature of its InServ Storage Server disk arrays that the company claims will allow high-capacity, low-cost enterprise-class SATA to be used for all applications.

Pillar to ship application-aware thin provisioning
Pillar made software updates to its Axiom disk arrays, including a feature called Application-Aware Thin Provisioning, designed to automate storage provisioning according to application priority. Other new features include writeable block snapshots with no impact to cache or system performance and a new RAID option dubbed Pooled RAID 10. Pooled RAID 10 also can be set on a LUN-by-LUN basis and does not require that an entire drive be either RAID 5 or RAID 10. The new features will be generally available March 14.

CA brushes up mainframe backups
CA rolled out Vantage SRM r12, which automates storage monitoring and analysis tasks and takes corrective actions in z/OS mainframe storage environments. A new virtual tape offering, Vtape VTS r12 uses TCP/IP instead of expensive channel extenders for a new peer-to-peer option for real-time tape mirroring.
