Survey says companies unable to meet SOX deadline Nearly half (45%)of public companies do not expect to meet the message retention requirements laid out in the July 15, 2006, Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) compliance deadline, according to an August 2005 Web poll by Akonix Systems Inc.
According to SOX Sec. 404, public companies are required to undergo an annual evaluation of their internal controls and procedures for financial reporting, as well as an assessment for the effectiveness of these controls. Some large-cap businesses were forced to attest these controls were in place this year, while smaller-cap companies and corporate businesses who filed for an extension need to do so by mid-July 2006. An Akonix Systems Inc.'s survey of 157 executives at public companies, only 29% felt they would be able to meet the deadline for archiving messages, while a further 26% did not know if they would be prepared. Failing to meet the corporate accountability deadline can result in jail time for company executives and officers, as well as hefty financial fines.
EMC expands offerings for SAP EMC Corp. announced new EMC DatabaseXtender for SAP R/3 database archiving software and a new EMC Proven Solution called EMC Automated BRBACKUP Replication for SAP Solutions. Additionally, SAP has certified EMC Centera content-addressed storage and Xythos Webfile Server 4.3 for SAP's new data archiving service using the WebDAV protocol.
EqualLogic supports 500 GB drives EqualLogic Inc. announced that its PS300E iSCSI array supports 500 GB SATA II drives. In addition, the startup announced support for Microsoft's Data Protection Manager 2006. EqualLogic's PS Series of arrays can be used as the target device for Microsoft DPM users and also provides them with a remote replication and disaster recovery (DR) capability. EqualLogic has approximately 600 customers.
QLogic qualifies with Microsoft QLogic Corp. announced products from its SAN Express line have passed the requirements of the Microsoft Simple SAN Initiative. QLogic SAN Express products that have achieved certification include SANblade QLA200 HBAs and SANbox Express 1400 switches.
Cisco reports 2000th SAN customer Cisco Systems Inc. announced that BHF-BANK in Germany is the 2000th customer worldwide to deploy its SAN gear since the introduction of the Cisco MDS 9000 Family of Multilayer Intelligent directors and fabric switches in December, 2002.
Mendocino announces RecoveryONE Mendocino Software introduced recovery management software, called RecoveryONE. The software annotates the continuous data protection timeline with information concerning application and business processes. The user can then view the timeline with marked events, such as pre- and post-patch points, start and end of long-running processes, and quarterly closes
Hanson Brick & Tile chooses Topio Topio Inc. announced that brick manufacturer Hanson Brick & Tile has chosen Topio's Topio Data Protection Suite (TDPS) for long-distance disaster recovery. Hanson Brick & Tile is using TDPS to replicate data from UNIX and Windows systems in Morrisville N.C to its recovery center in Irving, Texas. The company decided to implement the new DR system because of SOX compliance needs.
Fujitsu to OEM Brocade embedded switch Brocade Communications Systems Inc. announced that it has provided an embedded FC Channel SAN switch module to Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The Primergy BX600 blade server is now available from Fujitsu Siemens with a Brocade SilkWorm embedded SAN switch module. Brocade also provides an embedded FC SAN switch module for blade servers to many of its other major OEM partners.

Agilent Technologies introduces RoHS-compliant transceivers Agilent Technologies Inc. introduced RoHS-compliant, multimode fiber optic transceivers targeted at 4 Gbps FC storage networking applications such as FC switches, disk arrays and host bus adapters. The small-form-factor modules are fully compliant with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
