Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and Hewlett-Packard Co. announced the first 300 GB Fibre Channel and SCSI disk drives. HP will offer the Hitachi Ultrastar 10K300 Fibre Channel drive in the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) and the Ultrastar 10K300 SCSI drive in HP ProLiant servers and the HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array (MSA) family.

Emulex Corp. and Brocade Communications Systems Inc. have expanded a multi-year strategic partnership to simplify the deployment of SANs in enterprise, midrange and small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB). The companies said they would co-develop a SAN management wizard to integrate installation and management of Emulex HBAs and Brocade Fibre Channel switches into one interface. "We're looking to make SANs easier to use," Doug Rainbolt, Brocade's VP of transport business, told Byte and Switch. "The biggest complaint we've had from SMBs is they want us to make things easier." BlueArc Corp. announced the launch of an enterprise-level channel program for sales partners throughout North America and Europe. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Data Domain unveiled Data Domain Replicator, an add-on software package to its DD200 Restorer D2D recovery appliance that uses the company's compression technology to reduce bandwidth needs. Rather than transporting tapes to remote storage facilities, Replicator provides network vaulting so that client data is protected at remote offices and sites. "Replicator is not going to reduce the number of backup licenses you have at remote sites, but it will make those deployments more efficient," said Brad O'Neill, senior analyst and consultant with the Taneja Group.
