CDP still not a must-have for users

Continuous data protection (CDP) technology still has an uphill climb to win over Storage magazine readers. Just 23% of respondents to our recent survey use a CDP product vs. the 33% who said they used CDP when we asked this question in late 2006. This time around, there are also fewer respondents who have plans to implement the technology. Sixty-three percent say they don't plan to use CDP in their backup environment vs. 37% of respondents in the previous survey. However, file-based CDP has gained ground over block-based CDP, which had been the most popular implementation of the technology. Fifty-five percent of respondents are proponents of file-based CDP vs. 44% in 2006, and application-based CDP usage has risen to 14% in the most recent survey. The primary reason respondents say they aren't using CDP is because they lack the resources for another data protection application.
