Western Digital 520Gb/in2 areal density: Western Digital used its perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR)/tunneling magneto-resistive (TuMR) head technology to achieve an areal density that allows the company to produce a single platter with a capacity of 640GB and hard drives with capacities as large as 3TB. Projected availability is 2010. Western Digital announced the achievement at the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Conference in Tokyo.
Aristos Logic single-chip RAID: Aristos Logic has developed the first multiprotocol RAID storage processor device, the AL3450 UltraSlice-MPx, in response to growing market segments like blade servers. The AL3450 UltraSlice-MPx integrates the multiprocessor RAID Storage Processor (RSP) engine, 3Gb/sec SAS and 4Gb/sec Fibre Channel host and disk interfaces, and a PCI-X interface on a single chip. Aristos Logic's RSP contains pipelined RISC designed to expedite data movement.
