LTO-3 a better buy than LTO-2
On the open market, LTO-3 tape drives have been cheaper than their LTO-2 predecessors for quite some time. Today, it costs about 15% less to buy an LTO-3 drive than an LTO-2 model (what OEM vendors choose to charge for the drives integrated into a tape library is another story). The other factor to consider is media costs. Last month, the two LTOs showed a cost per gigabyte of $0.14. This month, though, LTO-3 media costs slipped by 6.3% to $0.13 per GB, making it a better buy over LTO-2 on both the media and drive fronts.
