Q: Is DVD, rather than CD-ROM, a viable optical format for long-term storage?
Optical storage can be good for long-term archiving, especially if you're saving data for more than 10 years. But while technological obsolescence is a big problem with unique 14-inch and 5.25-inch WORM formats, CD-ROM formats will be readable for many years due to the format's use in consumer products. CD-ROM formats include the original CD-ROM format, CD-R, DVD-R and
DVD+R. Because today's DVD drives can read discs written with the
older CD-R format, users don't have to copy their old CD-R archives to new media to read them. Future generations of consumer disc recorders should be able to read several generations of recording formats. Users with long-term storage archiving needs will still need to copy old data to new media when vendors stop supporting the format, but this will happen less frequently for users who choose widely supported standard formats like DVD for their archive media. --Mike Casey, principal analyst, Contoural Inc.
