Half-terabyte drives on tap
Issue: Jul 2005
printer-friendly

Calculating the raw capacity of a disk subsystem will be a lot easier now that disk-drive capacity comes in 500GB increments, a nice round number. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST) is already shipping its Deskstar 7K500, while Maxtor and Seagate have announced 500GB disks that will ship this summer and early fall.

HGST's Deskstar and Seagate's Barracuda 7200.9 500GB drives are based on the Serial ATA-II specification, which features data rates of 3Gb/sec. Maxtor...

claims some of its 500GB drives will be SATA-II compliant, although some will still ship with the parallel ATA 133 interface.

In terms of apps, the sky's the limit for 500GB drives. Maxtor, for one, is introducing five distinct products based on the 500GB platform: the consumer electronics-oriented QuickView for DVR-type applications; Maxtor Shared Storage for adding capacity to home networks; MaXLine for enterprise apps; DiamondMax for the desktop; and the OneTouch external backup drive.
