Quantum Optyon: First inline data compression technology for a virtual tape system. Developed for use with Quantum's DX-Series virtual tape libraries, Optyon compression effectively doubles the usable capacity on the virtual tape library without degrading system performance, the company says. That's in contrast to software-based compression, which Quantum says can degrade performance by as much as 50%.
Quantum's Optyon compression is implemented through one or more dedicated hardware adapter cards located in the DX-Series controller, and allows users to continue to achieve performance of up to 1TB/hour for DX30 models, and 2TB/hour for the DX100.
With Optyon compression enabled, every DX disk array provides 6.5TB usable capacity assuming 2:1 compression. That means that a 16TB DX30 can hold up to 26TB of usable capacity, while a fully loaded 64TB DX100 can hold up to 104TB.
IBM xSeries 366: First server to support Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives. Slated to ship by the end of next month, the x366 features a SAS I/O controller from Adaptec, as well as the company's Zero Channel SAS RAID controller, featuring RAID 6 technology. RAID 6 allows data recovery from multiple, simultaneous drive failures.
