The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has a new special interest group (SIG) focused on Continuous Data Protection (CDP), a new category of software that aims to let you roll back to any point in time before an outage.
Members of the new SIG are mostly smaller players-- Alacritus Software, InMage Systems, Mendocino Software, Mimosa Systems, Revivio, Scentric, Storactive, TimeSpring Software and XOsoft--but big names like EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, Network Appliance, Sun Microsystems and Veritas are also

For example, many IT professionals don't know there are three basic kinds of CDP: block-level CDP, which melds the concepts of snapshots and journaling; file-level CDP, which incorporates a roll-back function; and application-aware CDP.
The CDP SIG also plans to do some early stage standardization, says Eric Burgener, VP of marketing at Mendocino Software, as well as an API from which data protection applications can access the data the CDP engine has stored.
