majority of applications were designed for local LAN environments. They don't take into consideration WAN issues such as bandwidth limitations, TCP/IP packet latency (TCP overhead), speed of light latency (distance) or TCP/IP packet loss (retransmissions). These WAN issues can reduce throughput by as much as 95% of the bandwidth. As bandwidth is reduced, user frustration grows because of agonizingly slow application response times with reads and writes that are measured in minutes vs. milliseconds.
