SCSI Drives Trend Downward
For the first time in recent memory, high-performance SCSI drives are selling for significantly less than the month before. Seagate's 15K 36GB Ultra320 drives dropped 2.6% between July and August, as compared to a total decline of 1.9% in the five previous months. The 73GB Cheetah 10K, meanwhile, was down a full 8.3% to under $300 per drive. Seagate is expected to announce a new round of products this quarter, and is either clearing out its inventory or responding to increased competition from other high-performance disk drive makers, especially Maxtor Corp., says Dave Reinsel, research manager for hard disk drives and components at IDC.
