LT0-2 tape technology has arrived, and the biggest beneficiary--price-wise--is LTO-1 drives, which dropped almost 7% this month. An LTO-1 drive now costs 37% less than larger, faster second-generation LTO technology, approximately the same as the difference between LTO-1 and LTO-2 media. That's in marked contrast to SDLT technology. SDLT 220 drives cost about 15% less than SDLT 320 drives, but the average price of SDLT 220 media is actually 2% more than for SDLT 320. With SDLT 640 on the way, it seems like Quantum doesn't want anyone to buy older SDLT technology.
