With the exception of Maxtor's 120GB IDE drive--which exhibited its usual steady decline (3.7%)--some storage products we track exhibited a slight increase this month. We find that's often the case after a month of sudden price drops. Take for example Fuji's LTO-2 Ultrium tape media, which last month dropped 11.5% after its introduction in February. This month, the LTO-2 tape edged back up 3.2% and is now only off 8.64% from February. Another factor destabilizing pricing is the number of retailers that have begun offering the new media--almost twice as many today as two months ago, according to a search on www.pricegrabber.com. Tape drives, meanwhile, largely stayed steady this month, perhaps because of the relatively small number of online vendors that sell standalone units.
