Last month, we began tracking media for LTO-2 drives. While drive prices didn't drop--in fact, they rose slightly--media costs for LTO-2 sank 11.5%. LTO-2 media now costs about 19% more than the competition, SDLT 320. Interestingly enough, this month, SDLT 320 crossed the threshold and now actually sells for less than the previous generation SDLT 220, despite an important difference in capacity.
Among disk drives, the clear victor in terms of price drops were 10K rpm 73GB SCSI drives, which witnessed a 12.8% price drop, although all drives displayed downward movement. Tape drives largely stayed steady, perhaps because they sell in lower volumes than drives and tape media.
