As the double whammy of incremental economic growth and stock-market volatility dampen capital spending, prices for hardware storage components remained steady from July to August. "Two-cents worth" described the cost-per-gigabyte difference month-to-month for 73GB hard drives, while per-gigabyte costs for 181.6GB hard drives fell by a more significant 12 cents. Tape drives showed similar price resiliency, with LTO units registering the biggest change, dropping about $47 per unit. The biggest bargains came in LTO and Super DLT media, which fell 4% and 6%, respectively. The prices shown here reflect averages from storage VAR and online vendors.
