The beginning of summer saw continued softening in storage component pricing, especially for Super DLT and LTO Ultra tape drives. The steepest drop came for LTO Ultra drives, with average per unit costs leveling out at $5425.30, or almost $400 less than June rates. Similarly, the average cost for Super DLTs declined by more than $100.00 in June, for an attractive cost per gigabyte of less than $27.oo. Hard drives offered more modest savings for bargain hunters. Averages for 73GB units dropped by almost $37.oo, while prices for the newer 181.6GB components fell by almost $17.oo. Per-gigabyte costs for tape media declined by a penny. The prices shown here are averages from storage VAR and online vendors.
