Companies are serious about protecting their information assets from disasters. In our latest survey, 74% of respondents say their companies have a disaster recovery (DR) plan -- higher than some of the dismal numbers reported on recent industry surveys. Forty-eight percent are developing plans now. The majority of firms (52%) own their recovery sites and another 29% rent colocation space; only 11% count on the cloud for disaster relief. On a survey from two years ago, 54% said they tested their DR plans at least twice a year; this time it’s only 47%, with another 21% testing annually and 24% taking an informal approach without any specific testing schedules. Regardless of testing frequency, 80% expect their company to recover mission-critical apps within 24 hours. A quick recovery is good because 42% say they can’t afford to lose any data. Respondents also offered comments, the most esoteric of which was: “If you microwave Ivory soap it looks cool.” I guess some people have never recovered.
