Survey says: Users opt for appliance-based virtualization

If you're going to deploy block virtualization, the chances are pretty good that you'll go with an appliance rather than software on the array, switch or host. At least that's what storage managers who responded to TheInfoPro's Wave 6 Storage Study indicated. Host-based virtualization in particular seems to have fallen out of favor, with only 14% of respondents saying they plan to use it. And if you're curious about why storage professionals are considering virtualization, the reason cited by 61% of respondents is data migration, pure and simple. Other much-touted benefits of virtualization--better utilization, cost savings and easier provisioning--were cited by a minority of respondents.
