Respondents to our recent Storage magazine survey like SAS drives and mainly for their price--although SAS adoption still trails Fibre Channel (FC) by a wide margin. SAS drive usage has jumped since the last time we asked about its adoption, with 63% of respondents now using the technology vs. 10% in the fall of 2007. The top reason for using SAS drives remains the same: They offer the performance users need at a lower cost than FC drives. Heavyweight FC still reigns in the disk drive arena; of all the drives respondents use in their arrays, 146GB FC is still No. 1. However, the percentage of users naming that format dropped from 59% to 54% this year. And while users like SAS drives, the majority keep less than 20% of their total capacity on the drives. All configurations of SAS drives--36GB, 73GB, 146GB and 300GB--gained ground since last year, with 146GB usage rising the most, from 16% to 53%.
