Not only is tape not dead, it's alive and kicking in a variety of formats, although the various incarnations of the LTO format dominate most purchasing plans. LTO-3 tape drives are the most popular format among tape user respondents to Storage magazine's spring Storage Purchasing Intentions survey. Coming in a close second is LTO-4 with 23%. However, 14% of those surveyed are still hanging on to their LTO-1 and LTO-2 format tapes. A combined 13% use SDLT or DLT tapes, and a tiny group (2%) use high-performance AIT and SAIT tape drives.
