Information life cycle management (ILM):
A storage management discipline that aims to manage data from creation to deletion, or "cradle-to-grave," as its value changes over time. Typically built upon hierarchical storage management (HSM) technology, which provides data movement between different tiers of storage (online disk vs. tape, for example), ILM also adds a policy engine to help administrators automatically match data with an appropriate medium, as well as data protection and archival strategy.
