Do you use 1Gb/s or 2Gb/s switches? - Storage Technology Magazine

Do you use 1Gb/s or 2Gb/s switches?

1. What speed Fibre Channel switches do you use?
2. Why are you running 1Gb/s equipment?
3. When did you upgrade from 1Gb/s to 2Gb/s?

Judging from our survey, FC switch vendors aren't being bowled over with requests to upgrade existing 1Gb/s equipment. A sizeable majority (56%) of respondents still run 1Gb/s SANs, compared to a measly 13% running pure 2Gb/s environments. Migration to 2Gb/s will be gradual, largely because there isn't a pressing need (62% of respondents say that 1Gb/s is sufficient), and because of budgetary constraints (25%).

As one user puts it, "The 2Gb/s switches have other advantages besides speed that would make an upgrade worth it ... if we had the money."
