Diagnostic Tool Shines Light on SDLT

Quantum is shipping a suite of drive and media diagnostic tools for its SDLT tape drives called DLTSage that the company says will help IT managers more easily manage their tape resources.

According to Steve Berens, Quantum senior director of product marketing and strategy, DLTSage provides diagnostic information comparable to what enterprise drives like StorageTek's 9940 and IBM's 3590 provide, but puts it in the hands of in-house IT administrators. "It's another set of knobs and buttons for them to turn," he says.

Quantum's partners seem to welcome DLTSage. "Tape alerts let you do things like, for example, identify a bad piece of media, which is otherwise very difficult to do," says Dave Uvelli, product manager for ADIC's i2000 tape library, which will support DLTSage. Computer Associates, meanwhile, will use DLTSage data in its BrightStor storage management solution. "Assuming that more information is better than less, this is a good thing," says Gary McGuire, senior vice president for BrightStor solutions.

If nothing else, Quantum's DLTSage offers a break from the typical, "'Yeah, we're eclipsing people on speeds and capacities' announcement,"' says Quantum's Berens. "That's getting kind of ho-hum."
