Should you wait to adopt an email archiving system if you have near-term plans to migrate your email system to a newer version?

That's a question that we get quite a bit -- people wonder if they need to wait to look at email archiving before they move to a new version of their email system. The answer is really "no." It's a much better idea to fully implement the current email archiving system before migrating to a newer version.

Email retention policy: A step-by-step approach
It's a matter of performance. When you create an email archive, you're moving a lot of the email content off email servers and onto archive servers. If that's already in place, when you migrate (e.g., from Microsoft Exchange 2000 to 2003) you generally have a lot less content on the email server that you need to migrate. This makes the migration process faster and less disruptive.
