This month, storage analyst Jerome M. Wendt's Tech Report takes look at storage resource management (SRM) tools. According to Wendt, SRM tools are taking on new tasks, refining their data and device reporting capabilities and becoming much more closely linked to mission-critical business applications. This is in part due to the acquisition of SRM software companies by storage stalwarts such as EMC Corp., Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co., IBM Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. These acquisitions have driven upgrades to native subsystem software that support heterogeneous storage. As a result, the days when SRM products from hardware vendors managed only their devices are gone.
