Despite some vendors' claims that tape is dead, mainframe storage (and tape) remain an integral part of high-end data centers. Open storage vendors have also returned to the mainframe for clues on good SRM/virtualization features.
Hitachi Data Systems has followed IBM's lead and is now offering native FICON connectivity for the Hitachi Freedom Storage Lightning 9900. FICON is a replacement for the current ESCON connectivity, and promises improved data transfer rates and supports greater distances between Lightning 9900 storage systems and z/OSTM or S/390O mainframes.
