Data storage startups to watch: Drobo Inc.

Building technology for SMBs brings enterprise data storage
to smaller firms
Vendor: Drobo Inc.
Category: SMB storage systems
Product: Drobo
Why it makes our list: Goes beyond RAID to make storage simple for small
companies
Drobo launched in 2007 to prove that managing data storage doesn’t have to be
complicated for small businesses or even consumers. Drobo’s business product line includes the
B800fs for file sharing, the B8001 eight-bay iSCSI system and the B1200i 12-bay
iSCSI SAN. The
vendor also has desktop, direct-attached and backup boxes for professionals. Drobo gained early
success by building small- and medium-sized business (SMB) and prosumer storage from the ground up
instead of dumbing down
enterprise arrays. But now it faces increasing competition from larger vendors
such as EMC Corp.’s Iomega and others with SMB experience such as Buffalo Technology Inc. Headed by
CEO Tom Buiocchi, a former exec at Fibre Channel switch vendor Brocade, you can expect Drobo to
target larger customers and perhaps one day take on the enterprise.
