The hybrid HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8440 is the latest iteration of Hewlett Packard Enterprise's converged system that blends hybrid flash and traditional spinning disk. StoreServ 8440 is the highest capacity model in Hewlett Packard Enterprise's (HPE) 3PAR StoreServ 8000 storage area network (SAN) product family, which also includes the 8200 and 8400 hybrid and the all-flash 8450 systems.
StoreServ 8440 arrays scale to 3 PB of raw storage with a combination of solid-state drives and hard disks, with support for block and file protocols.
Rated by the vendor to deliver more than 1 million IOPS with sub-millisecond latency, the HPE StoreServ 8440 comes with 10 Ivy Bridge processor cores for high-performance storage. Although not built as a native flash system, HPE designed the StoreServ 8440 array with features for extending flash endurance and granular data reduction.
Our judges praised the HPE 8440 iSCSI array's versatile performance. The "most solid all-around modern storage array" was the assessment of one evaluator, while another judge hailed it as "a very flexible midrange workhorse." Other judges remarked on the HPE's competitive street discounts.
The StoreServ 8440 supports consumer-grade multilevel cell NAND flash drives up in capacities up to 3.84 TB. Four controllers are configured in a "mesh-active cluster" for load balancing and high performance. Controller ASICs automatically change the frequency of metadata offloads from cache to flash media and also support inline data deduplication.
The HP 3PAR operating system includes Adaptive Sparing technology to extend the life of flash media. Persistent checksum on the ASIC ensures write integrity, while Adaptive Flash Cache uses flash capacity to adaptively extend system cache, accelerate workloads and improve service levels.
HP Smart Start software taps intelligence embedded in SAN components to automate installation. Users can manage block, file and object access for up to 16 arrays through the StoreServ Management Console.
Pricing for HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8440 hybrid system starts at $31,290, which includes a configuration of six 300 GB HDDs and the 3PAR Operating System.
