QUESTION POSED ON: 12 July 2004 What are the security concerns for maintaining a mix of operating systems on the same host?
>
EXPERT RESPONSE
Any given operating system must be hardened before it is used to provide critical services to handle corporate information. When you mix more than one operating system, you will need to understand the weaknesses of each -- and your server is only as secure as the weaker of the two or more operating systems. There may be conflicts in securing multiple operating systems -- e.g. fixing a hole in one operating system may open a new hole in the other operating system.
