Your question is an interesting one and is more related to what one has one to protect the data from the start as recovery methods can cover a very wide area from recalling an archived tape for a server application to taking a disk out of a notebook and sending it off for recovery services due to a failed mechanical part (motor, head, etc.).
The best way to avoid costly and time-consuming recovery methods is to plan accordingly by forming tiers based on storage requirements and then protecting the data accordingly. One's most important data should be protecting with synchronous mirroring of the data to a remote site and then archived accordingly vs. a home directory which maybe backed up on a daily basis to tape.
Many customers today are looking at data protection as an integral part of their environmental decisions as they look strategically at their businesses.
