For free Linux stuff for advanced computing, you can download some pretty cool solutions from the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing
Applications). They created a block-based storage/application grid using Linux that scales geographically.
Most of the cool block-based virtualization stuff is from vendors so therefore, not free. I did an Internet search a while ago to find a free "global file system" for storage and if I remember correctly, there were a few hits. If you have a budget, you can try Sistina.com for a GFS. SGI also has CXFS.
