QUESTION POSED ON: 06 June 2003
What are detailed differences between latency and bandwidth?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE

This is a good question. Think of latency as the time it takes for a signal to get from one place to another and bandwidth as the amount of information that can be transferred.

Heartbeat beat signals in clusters do not have much information to exchange and do not need much bandwidth. However, they do need very low latency.

Storage I/O transmissions typically need both low latency and high bandwidth. It's interesting to point out that the acknowledgements for storage do not need high bandwidth, just a low latency.

Regards,
Marc
