QUESTION POSED ON: 22 May 2003
I am familiar with SCSI disk drives and I know IDE are drives are installed in my personal computer. However, I am confused over ATA drives. What are they and what differentiates them from IDE and SCSI?

EXPERT RESPONSE

In general, IDE refers to the controller and ATA refers to the drive technology. If you are not an engineer you can use the terms interchangeably without wreaking havoc. However, the new serial ATA drives (SATA) are NOT likely to be called serial IDE.
