QUESTION POSED ON: 03 February 2003

My environment consists of EMC 3930 at primary and 3930 on secondary. I also have an EMC 3930 on the remote site that is 30KM away. I have dark fiber between primary and remotes site. My problem is I want to send data to the remote site for disaster recovery.

Currently the 3930 doesn't support two-way SRDF so I can only send data to the secondary site using SRDF synchronous. I tried using host-based mirror using on a Solaris host. The problem is writing to the remote site produces SCSI timeout errors. Does this mean that I can't send data synchronously to a remote site? And, what other tools can I use to send data to my remote site without upgrading the Symmetrix.

I would think that it would be very hard to write synchronously to a site so far away without the use of other technologies. I would look at asynchronous replication software for such a remote site. There are a number of such products that are non-EMC specific. Look at SearchStorage.com or storagemountain.com for asynchronous replication products.
