QUESTION POSED ON: 05 March 2002
We are looking at creating a repository to store audio and video files that could grow to multi-terabyte capacity. Does tape still provide the best method for archiving files, and does it still provide a lower total cost of ownership when compared to large capacity disk systems?

>

Even though the price of disks has dropped significantly, tape will continue to be the archiving media of choice.

If you are going to be recovering the media files on a regular basis, then the recovery time will factor into your TCO. A disk subsystem could be used to restore most recent media and reduce restore times. If this time is costly to your company, a disk subsystem might be justified.
