QUESTION POSED ON: 06 December 2001
We have an SQL server, exchange server, transaction server and a Webserver. We backup the data to tape attached on an exchange server. Because the tape is not enough for backup now, we are considering changing our backup device.

Is it a good idea to use NAS for the backup device? And what kind of backup software do you suggest?

EXPERT RESPONSE

There's no problem using a NAS system as a backup device assuming your application is file system oriented, which I assume yours is. It's a matter of whether the cost makes sense or not. There are several software vendors for backup and I wouldn't try to recommend one over the other.

I suggest talking to salesmen for the backup software vendor and to some of your peers to get referential information. Additionally, sales and support (who you like to deal with) is a big factor.
