QUESTION POSED ON: 13 January 2005 We have recently converted our Oracle database backups to write to a NAS. Our network and sys admins are questioning whether NAS is appropriate to use for this purpose. Obviously the traffic over the LAN would be sizable when backing up database files. Have you heard of problems using a NAS in this manner? Thank you.

Using a NAS for backup shouldn't be a problem, assuming your backup server has enough horsepower, and you have the necessary available network bandwidth. Usually most companies end up putting NAS on a separate network or at least its own subnet. You should probably do that right away.
