QUESTION POSED ON: 17 March 2005
My company is developing a very big project with two partners. Previously, we had installed the Oracle database only on an HDS SAN. One of our partners wants to install the database in this project on NAS. We think that even though NAS is a very mature technology, in a critical project, you'd have to install the Oracle database only on NAS. Am I right about this?

Whether the NAS device is adequate for your database application depends on several things: what performance requirements are, the speed of the NAS device, and what other traffic is competing for that network. You need to determine the performance requirements. NAS can be perfectly adequate for many if not most database requirements. You can check some NAS performance numbers at www.specbench.org. The network question is one you need to ask your network guys, and might lead you to isolating that segment of the network.
