QUESTION POSED ON: 10 March 2005 What are the security issues in taking backups for NAS devices?
>
There are overall security issues such as the physical security of the tapes, control of access to the backup devices and servers, and administrative control for access to the backup software. An additional concern is that the backup may be going over an Ethernet IP network and it needs to be secure. That can be done using some security on the transmission, such as IPsec, or having a network that is sheltered from any outside access. Other than that, the backup of a NAS device has the same security concerns as backing up block storage system data.
