QUESTION POSED ON: 19 August 2004
What is the best way to migrate from a Windows 2000 direct attached cluster to a CX330?

>
There are many different ways to migrate from a Windows 2000 server environment clustered with direct attached storage to a CX300; however, the most important thing is to clarify what you are moving from and what you are moving to. Assuming that your existing environment is using internal storage in the servers and that you want to migrate the data on that storage to a shared EMC Clariion CX300 or similar storage subsystem, there are a couple of different approaches that you can use. One approach, if you have Microsoft VDS (Virtual Disk Services) and VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Services) installed on your system, would be to use those tools to provision your new storage and then have the VSS and VDS perform the data movement and when done, de-allocate the old storage.

You might want to ask your EMC representative what data copy services they can provide to you and what the cost and downtime associated would be. Of course, you can always go with good old backup from the original disk and restore to the new disk using disk-to-disk copy, which would be similar to using copy services. Note that when you are using backup and copy services, you should make sure the data attributes are also preserved. Also make sure that any affected applications know where the new data is located, which would also be a good opportunity to implement virtual volumes if you have not already done so. For more information about Microsoft storage services including VSS, VSD, iSCSI, Booting from SAN, Multipath IO (MPIO), and Storport diagnostic tools refer to this site.
