QUESTION POSED ON: 01 July 2004
In a recent article (Expert predicts the future of data center storage), Richard Scannell of Glasshouse Technologies states, "The last step in decoupling storage from computing is really being enabled by iSCSI."

What does he mean by that statement? Don't FC SANs already provide that function?

Architecturally, you are right. FC already did that, but economically, FC has been too expensive for most Windows environs. So I interpret Richard's comments as being based in economic reality. Some might argue that Windows Server 2003 was actually the last step, because the problem was never the connectivity, it was the Microsoft server operating systems. Small point though.
