QUESTION POSED ON: 30 March 2004
What is the minimum number of drives needed to set up a RAID-2 system?

>
This question is not so easy to answer since there is no clear link between how many error correction code (ECC) disks are needed. And, since RAID-2 is not really used anymore – today's hard disks provide the same ECC features as RAID2 does as a hardware feature -- I can only answer this from RAID-2 literature.

The minimum, according to the sources I have, is five data disks and one ECC disk which would make up to six disks.

Anyway, let me repeat that RAID-2 is not really used today and has been used very rarely in the past because of the rise of hardware integrated ECC in modern disk drives.
