A number of enterprise backup systems will failover a backup job if the drive or device/media server it is being backed up to goes down. What doesn't happen a lot is failover when the master backup server goes down. (The master is the one that schedules all of the backups. It may or may not have tape drives.)
Since backup failures are usually tape related, and not server related, this usually works out well especially if your master server does not have tape drives. For some, this is not good enough and they have made their master backup server a high-availability server.
