EMC Atmos is an object-based cloud storage platform that was released in November 2008. It is targeted toward service providers and large enterprises that want to build private clouds. EMC Corp. offers a hardware platform as well as a software-only virtual edition.
The Atmos Cloud Storage Platform features Atmos software paired with one of three hardware options of capacities ranging from 360 terabytes to 1.44 petabytes. Atmos Virtual Edition is compatible with any VMware-certified storage that can be accessed through the REST protocol.
In December 2012, EMC added support for the Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) application programming interface that allows for the movement of data from S3 to any Atmos public or private cloud. In a February 2012 hardware refresh, Atmos was scaled to the current capacity options and also introduced GeoProtect, a data protection feature that fragments data across different geographic locations.
