QUESTION POSED ON: 21 April 2003
My question is about name servers in a multi-switch SAN fabric. Is there a way, after principal switch selection, to create a name server in a switch that contains every node that switch would talk with -- not just local ports?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Good question, but I think the answer is no. I have not found a way to prepopulate the name server data with data from switches that have never been part of the same fabric.

I assume you want to do this to avoid RSCN traffic. One way to avoid this when creating a wide area SAN is to use a gateway between SAN islands that utilize the iFCP protocol rather than the FC-IP protocol. iFCP isolates SAN traffic within an island unless the destination is at the remote location.

Chris
