QUESTION POSED ON: 13 February 2004
Fair call on the SATA to SCSI comparison. I would be interested if you have an opinion on SAS. This is where I think the real action will be in terms of bangs for bucks for users wanting robust but cost effective storage solutions.

EXPERT RESPONSE
It will be interesting to see where Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) plays. I believe we'll see SAS drives first as captive storage inside some servers. If SAS had come out before SATA, it would probably be very popular and the predominant captive drive interface. Now, I believe many of the servers will use SATA drives but there will still be successes there. The harder call is whether SAS drives will be used in disk modules instead of FC drives. There is another generation of FC drives coming out with greatly reduced costs.

There will not be any discernible different prices so I don't think most vendors will be inclined to take the risk to make a change but it remains to be seen. I suspect we'll some successes there but it won't take over the world as the marketing BS would lead you to believe.
