What does a terabyte look like?

QUESTION POSED ON: 04 February 2002
I want to be able to mentally visualize a terabyte of storage data. What analogy can be made to describe how much storage a terabyte involves? It could be in terms of pages in a book, feature length movie or a similar reference that would commonly be understood.

EXPERT RESPONSE

Interesting question! I like it! How about some of the following?

A terabyte is:

More than 300 feature length movies.
40,000 faxes.
15,000 CDs converted to MP3 at high fidelity.
Enough words that it would take every adult in America speaking at the same time five minutes to say them all.
